HSPA+ is a network.HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Plus) is the name of the set of HSPA enhancements that are defined in 3GPP beyond Release 6 (R6). The enhanced downlink (HSDPA) was defined in R5 and the enhanced uplink (HSUPA) was defined in R6.
HSPA+ is an enhanced version of high-speed 3G wireless networks. Because it is so closely related to 3G and is not a new, built-from-the ground-up technology, HSPA+ has been called a 3.5G network instead of a true 4G network. But HSPA+ networks are capable of delivering 4G speeds, with download speeds between 5 megabits per second and 8 mbps.

This means that when you use an HSPA+ enabled device to access the internet, pages will load even quicker than normal on your phoneor computer – and you can expect faster downloads too.

Key Features of HSPA+:

It increases HSPA capacity as well as reduce latency below 50 milliseconds
It supports voice and data services on the same carrier and across all of the available radio spectrum and offers these services simultaneously to users

Just because 802.11 is a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) standard doesn’t mean that COTS products can be used in the industrial environment, warns Advantech’s Lochhaas. Industrially hardened access points “will survive in the industrial environment when exposed to extremes of temperature, dust, humidity, hazardous vapors and other common situations,” he says. “So when selecting your industrial wireless products, be certain to determine their suitability for the service you wish to use them in.”

E-lins notes, “Industrial environments are harder on wireless than any office would ever be,” which can drastically shorten the useful lifespan of wireless equipment. You get what you pay for in this world, and using office-grade networking equipment to save small amounts of money upfront will turn out to be a huge mistake when you have to pay for it later with downtime and repairs.”

E-lins’s comments could serve as a handy maxim to guide your approach not just to COTS components, but to wireless implementation in general.

E-lins  Wireless has been dealing with that problem recently. It’s supplying the on-bus 3G Wi-Fi routers for Sydney’s Opal transport smartcard, which is supposed to catch NSW up to the rest of the nation by actually introducing a work on-train smartcard.

As part of a supply contract with Opal’s main developer Cubic Transportation Systems to fit out 5000 Sydney buses, E-lins had to customise one of its existing designs. Many of the features on the router would be recognisable in most networking contexts: it has eight on-board ports, and can switch between using Telstra’s 3G networks when on the road and Wi-Fi signal when in maintenance areas. But it also required some changes.

“We’ve specialised the device so that it copes with vehicles being turned on and off which can cause spikes and currents in the available power,” E-lins Wireless’s Evan zou told us. “It’s also vibration-proof.”

The bus rollout is currently half-completed (though only two routes in Sydney are active), and scheduled to finish by the end of 2014.
